A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is a paper or glass material filter that traps particles to clean the air. A true HEPA filter is rated to remove 99.97% of all particles that are 0.3 microns in size or larger. Particle sizes are measured in microns, where a micron is one millionth of a meter. A human hair is approximately 60 microns in diameter and much of what a HEPA filter captures is much smaller, in fact microscopic in size. This is important as these tiny particles are the ones that stay suspended in the air and create problems as they can be breathed deep into your lungs.
HEPA air purifiers are clearly the the recommended filtration method of air quality experts and leading government agencies such as the American Lung Association, Department of Homeland Security and EPA. These favorable reviews are due to the high efficiency of the HEPA filter and it’s inherent ability to improve performance over time.
